El Salvador
Universidad de El Salvador (4 centers)

The University of El Salvador (UES): as the only institution of public and national higher education, it promotes the sectors of the country with fewer economic resources. It belongs to the Network of Macrouniversities, with a matriculation of more than 49,000 students. It has 4 headquarters, 2 of which are in less favoured zones: the Eastern campus, located in the department of San Miguel, and the paracentral campus, located in the department of San Vicente.

Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas

The Central American University Jose Simeón Cañas (UCA) has a marked social consciousness, in spite of being a private institution. To be admitted UCA requires students to submit to a process of differentiated quotas in which they are assigned a monthly instalment according to the economic capacities of their family group. About 70% of the students pay less than the average quota, benefitting students of limited resources. With a matriculation that exceeds 10,000 students it is active,, through its social projection, throughout the national territory.


Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (5 centers)

The University of San Carlos of Guatemala (USCG): in its role as the only state university it has the exclusive role of directing, organising and developing the higher education of the State and state education, and the diffusion of culture in all its manifestations. It belongs to the Network of Macrouniversities, since it has more than 130,000 students, of which 75% belong to the poor sectors of the population. It has 13 Regional Centers, 4 of which are in less favoured zones: University Centre of the North-East (in Huehuetenango), University Center of the North (in Alta Verapaz), University Center of the East (in Chiquimula) and University Center of the South-East (in Jalapa). The USCG has participated in multiple cooperation initiatives, including as most important projects ALPHA II and III, Ford Foundation projects.


Universidad Rafael Landívar (4 centers)

The University Rafael Landívar (URL) is one of the most prestigious universities of Guatemala, and Central America as a whole. With matriculation of more than 25,000 students, it has 10 Regional headquarters, trying to develop a university concept with a regional profile, that has the capacity to affect the implemenntation of models of sustainable development in the regions of Guatemala and contributes to the execution of the Peace accords and the construction of a multi-ethnic, multicultural and multilingual country. Three of these Headquarters are in the least favoured regions of the country: the headquarters of Huehuetenango, Quiché, and Alta Verapaz.


Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras

National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) is an autonomous state University; constitutionally responsible for organising, directing and developing the 3rd and 4th levels of the national educational system. Due to its size it is part of the Network of Macrouniversities and includes 8 Regional Centres at National Level, 4 of which are in the less favoured zones: Copán, El Paraíso, Choluteca and Comayagua.


Universidad Pedagógica Nacional Francisco Morazán

The National Pedagogical University Francisco Morazán (UPNFM) is the teacher training university par excellence, and 80% of its student population comes from the poorest sectors of the population. It has regional headquarters in 8 of the less favoured zones (Lempira, Santa Barbara, Copán, Choluteca, Comayagua, Ocotepeque, Intibucá and Gracias a Dios).


Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas

Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Chiapas (UNACH) has agreements of cooperation and mobility with institutions of superior education. One of the main objectives of the present Administrative Management, shaped in its Academic Project 2006-2010 "University for the Development", is to promote academic and student mobility and the internationalization of the own institution. The UNACH has managed to increase the mobility flow and to extend the agreements of cooperation with prestigious public institutions of higher education, nationally and abroad. The projects they participate in at present are ANUIES, with 145 members, CAROLINA, COMEXUS, FULLBRIGHT, SANTANDER SERFIN and JIMA, among others.


Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla

The Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) participates in 20 different networks, e.g. Tuning LA in the area of History. It has partnerships with 243 institutions/universities worldwide. It also forms part of the following networks: CLARA -Cooperación Latino Americana de Redes Avanzadas (Latin American Cooperation of Advanced Networks) organized within the framework of the CAESAR Project -financed by the DG IST program of the EC; @LIS - Alliance for the Information Society (Alianza para la Sociedad de la Información) Program of Latin American cooperation.


Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo

The Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Hidalgo (UAEH) is the public institution of higher education with the greatest impact in the center of Mexico. It has much experience in managing and participating in national and international networks. They are in the level 6 of less developed states in Mexico (IDH). The University of Hidalgo is coordinator of the Consorcio de Universidades Mexicanas (CUMex); coordinator of the Region Centro- Sur ANUIES; is member of the Consortium for North American Higher Education Collaboration (CONAHEC); Jovenes de intercambio México-Argentina (JIMA); Asociación Nacional de Universidades e Instituciones de Educación Superior (ANUIES); Association of International Educators (NAFSA); Universidades Españolas (RED G-9); UMAP; University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP); Asociacion Mexicana de Educadores Internacionales (AMPEI).


Universidad de Guadalajara

University of Guadalajara (UdG) is 1 of the largest and most important universities in Mexico. Also, it is a national and international referent in topics of internationalisation. It has 475 international treaties (of which 223 are with universities in 19 Europe) and 313 national; additionally it has participated in 77 associations and networks of collaboration (17 international associations, 4 national associations, 53 international networks of collaboration, 3 national networks of collaboration). Among several of these associations and networks universities of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua also participate, such as the Union of Latin American Universities (UDUAL), and the Network of Public Macrouniversities of Latin America and the Caribbean. Additionally it is collaborating in programs supporting diverse projects (research, development, educational support, scholarships, etc.) with Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, through the Secretariat of External Relations (in programs of bilateral and/or multilateral cooperation), the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT), the National Association of Universities and Institutions of Higher Education (ANUIES), among others, and in joint projects of the DAAD-CONACyT-ANUIES and Central American Higher University Council (CSUCA).


Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

The Independent National University of Mexico (UNAM) was founded in 1551, making it the oldest in North America. It is the largest university in LA (over180,000 students) and is 1 of the universities that appear in the Shanghai ranking of world universities. UNAM actively participates in the following international programmes and projects: Universia, ECOES, G9 Group of Universities, ALFA and ALBAN programmes, Founder member and headquarters of the Union of Universities of Latin America (UDUAL). As coordinator it takes responsibility for the Network of Macrouniversities of Latin America and the Trilateral Program of Student Mobility with the United States and Canada.


Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua – Managua

The Independent National University of Nicaragua - Managua (UNAN - Managua): it has 6 faculties, 1 regional and multidisciplinary located in Estelí (underprivileged zone). It also has 3 regional centres, 2 located in less favoured zones, Chontales and Matagalpa. 34,1% of matriculation at degree level occur in the Regional University Areas, which reflect an important decentralisation of the University and a significant national projection of its academic activity and social commitment.


Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua – León

The Independent National University of Nicaragua - Leon (UNAN - Leon): in line with the idea of bringing the University closer to the people and faithfully completing its mission, UNAN-Leon, as part of its policy of University Extension, has set out to have a presence throughout the national territory, taking as a reference the places where indicators of education are most unfavourable. In this way it has established a presence with regional headquarters in 4 of the less favoured zones: Jinotega, Rio San Juan, Madriz and Chinandega. In international cooperation, they have broad experience in participation in international projects financed by SAREC, Project Kellogg Foundation, AECI, Government of Norway, the FAO, etc. It has been a national focal point for the Becas ALBAN of the EU.
